The people of Gujarat are known for their rich, vibrant and colorful culture. Moreover, they are warm and cheerful, who are fond of celebrating any occasion or festival with fervor. This is quite evident in a Gujarati marriage as well. The wedding rituals in Gujarat are simple and filled with fun. The unique blend of traditions and ingenuousness is something which makes Gujarati weddings a sheer delight. And Riddhi & Pratik's wedding was no different.

The pre-wedding rituals began with the Mandva Mahurat, performed by both the bride and the groom. Prayers are offered to Lord Ganesha to remove all obstacles.Followed by Pithi and the Mameru ceremonies. One thing I love about this was how the whole family, including aunts and uncles, were involved in the pre- wedding rituals. 
Next at the Ponkvu or Ponkhana ceremony, multiple levels of security were at play for Pratik. This is the official start of the wedding. Here the mother-in-law welcomes the groom and performs an aarti. She then gently grabs his nose. This signifies that the groom rubbed his nose on their door step asking for their daughters’ hand. Our groom however was well prepared for facing the upcoming task with cousins protecting his nose from being pulled.

This was followed by the usual wedding rituals and pheras. Another interesting ritual came up next, called Shubhagyavati Bhava. According to this tradition, seven married women from the bride’s side whisper blessings in her right ear. This was so fun as these women and grannies especially, used the occasion to do some leg pulling of the couple. A scrumptious Gujarathi feast awaited all guests later in the afternoon. The wedding surely did leave a hearty smile on everyone's face as they left.
